The Politics of Myth

These talks were prepared for Melbourne Free University, a new initiative undertaken by some energetic young staff and postgraduates, mostly from Latrobe University.  They have set up a web-site and organised some talks -- both one-offs and short series like The Politics of Myth. They hold them in inner city sites: so far I have appeared at The Red Wheelbarrow Bookshop in Brunswick and Dexter's Cafe Bar in Clifton Hill, both genial locations. Entrance is free and discussion is encouraged. I have found these interesting events -- quite a few of the people who attend are knowledgeable and contribute very well -- and the whole process reminds me of the lively `adult education' style debates that were part of the energising of the intellectual and critical public in the 1960s and 1970s. Maybe things are improving from the bottom up, as intellectual inquiry seeks new media now it has been largely exiled from the universities.
